pollination. Some varieties like Honeysweet and Seckel
are considered self-fruitful but set better crops with cross-
pollination. Red Bartlett cultivars will not pollinate
Bartlett.

Red Anjou cultivars will not pollinate Anjou. Russet
Bosc will not pollinate Bosc. Oriental pear varieties will
not pollinate any of the recommended varieties.

Chemical Thinning

Use NAD only at 25 to 50 ppm applied 7 to 10 days
after petal fall. This has been satisfactory for Bartlett and
Bosc. Do not use later because small, misshapen fruit
may result. Apply the spray dilute, and the concentration
used depends upon tree vigor and amount of thinning
desired. As with apples, vigorous trees are more difficult
to thin, and weak-growing trees thin more easily.
