On August 20, 1998 a peach variety showcase was held at Hilltop Nurseries in Hartford, Michgan. Co-sponsored by Michigan State University Extension and Hilltop, the evening showcase was attended by approximately 50 area growers, industry representatives, and extension personnel. Several of southwest Michigan's prominent peach breeders, including the peach breeding program headed by Bill Shane at the MSU Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center; Paul Friday ('Flaming Fury' peach selections); and the Bjorge family ('Stellar' peaches) exhibited their newest peach cultivars. The peach breeders talked about the strengths and weaknesses--including fruit quality, harvest season, color, and handling--amongst their selections. Yellow and white-fleshed peaches were exhibited, as well as a some nectarines. No doubt all attendees came away with the satisfaction of knowing there are truly some exciting new peach varieties on the horizon.

Prominent southwest Michigan peach breeders--including Randy and Annette Bjorge, Wally Heuser, Paul Friday, and Bill Shane of MSU Extension--discuss the pros and cons of various new named and numbered peach cultivars/selections they are contemplating introducing to the industry.

Paul Friday, originator of the 'Flaming Fury' line of peaches, is particularly excited about his latest peach selection, PF24-007.

Randy and Annette Bjorge, Fruit Acres Farm, have worked closely with long-time fruit professional Wally Heuser to develop and promote their 'Stellar' line of peaches. They really like Glowingstar, which matures during Cresthaven season.
